The Odyssey Quilt Project tells the stories of eleven women of Dutch origin, who refer to themselves as 'the forgotten ones'. Each delicately sewn appliquéd panel narrates their vivid emotional and physical journeys from the Netherlands via the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia) to Australia.
The exhibition is accompanied by photographs, diaries and written stories. Together these deeply personal and precious items reflect the journeys of these brave women, echoing experiences that are familiar to many Australians. Initiated by Frances Larder, the first Odyssey Quilt Project was exhibited at Casula Powerhouse in 2002. A third quilt was created in 2003 and the exhibition toured to the Fremantle Arts Centre in 2006.
