Rules for (Amsterdams) Klaverjas

Four persons play the game of Klaverjas. Each person plays with a partner (mate) who sits opposite his partner. A game exists of sixteen rounds. Each player is dealt eight cards. The cards 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 are not used in this game.

By Wilma Tiley

The player that sits at the left hand of the person that dealt will make trump, according to the cards he has in has hands. Alternatively: The left over cards are on the table and one is turned before a game starts and that determines the trump (eg; if the 2 of Diamonds is turned, Diamonds will be trump) if he thinks his card is not good enough to play, he will ‘pass’ and the next person can pass or play the game. The person at the left of the person that dealt always starts the game, doesn’t matter who ‘plays’. Everyone has to follow the suite that that person puts on the table, if you can’t you have to put a trump card on the table, unless your mate has the card with the highest value on the table. If you haven’t got a card of that suite and you don’t have trump either, if the opposition is the highest, you will put a card of low value on the table. If your mate is leading you try to let him know which suite you have the highest value of or use a card of high value. If trump is asked for you have to go over the value that is on the table, if you have a higher value card in your hands. The person that had the card with the highest value on the table will be the next one to put his card first on the table.

klaverjasThe Jack is the highest value card of Trump, followed by the nine.

The value of the trump suite:
Jack = 20
Nine= 14
Ace = 11
Ten = 10
King = 4
Queen = 3
The seven and eight have no value

Value of the other suites:
Ace = 11
Ten = 10
King = 4
Queen = 3
Jack = 2
The seven, eight and nine have no value.

The partnership that wins the last four cards will get 10 extra points. The total value in one game (round) is 162 points. To win the person that took on the game will have to have at least half the points plus 1. If they don’t have enough points they go ‘nat’ (translates to wet) and the other party gets all the points.
Extra points can be made:
Three consecutive cards of the same suite on the table give 20 extra points,
Four consecutive cards is 50 points extra,
King and Queen of trumps will be an extra 20 points.
If a partnership wins all the cards they get 100 extra points (sometimes 90), often called a Mars.
