SELECTION OF ARTICLES IN THIS ISSUE OF HOLLAND FOCUS
Profiel van . . .
Wilma Bosman, needlecraft artist, in particular cross-stitch and "kralenboompjes". Her "Nachtwacht" took 252 hours, 75,392 cross-stitches and 1200 meter of thread to complete. A typical kralenboompje contains 9000 beads and special imported thread. Who is this patient, artistic lady? Read the article in our Nov-Dec 2012 issue.
Contribution from Jacob van Splunter. In this issue Jacob travelled to Cowra in the countryside of New South Wales where he stumbled upon a piece of forgotten war history. Surprisingly with a Dutch touch.
Verbeeldingen van Ambachten
Regular column by Frans Hertoghs analysing the poems and drawings by Jan Luyken (or Luiken).
Luyken lived in the second half of the "Golden Century" (17th century) and his work shows us the daily life of his time.
In this edition we look at "De Boeckdrucker" (boekdrukker, book printer).
Regular contribution from Frans Hertoghs about typical Dutch language use and misuse.
In this issue's article titled "Ukkelaars": Frans looks at the (Dutch) word for a citizen or inhabitant of certain countries and cities around the world. For instant: a Dutchman is from the Netherlands, a Cypriot is a native of Cyprus. But then in Dutch.
Kaaskoppen - a glance at the current Netherlands
Yolanda's regular column about actual affairs that keep the Nederlanders busy. This article, subtitled "facebook party", reflects on the mayhem resulting from an invitation for a birthday party posted on facebook. Thousands of people turned up.
Each issue a different title. Jan writes about virtually anything: interesting places in the Netherland to visit ranging from modern museums to historical towns; background to current affairs and social issues, to name a few.
This issue is about Harderwijk, tradition, trade and tourism, a small town on the shores of the former Zuiderzee. Once a prosporous trading town and esteemed member of the 14th century Hanze Union.
What is What
In each issue of Holland Focus Chris Lampe gives a description of something that is very popular with the Dutch. Readers who know the answer to the question related to this topic are invited to send it in and go into a prize draw. This issues correct answers go in the draw for Andre Rieu's collector's edition "King of the Walz".
Regular column by Darren Arnold, reviewing films with a Dutch or Flemish connection.
In this issue Darren reviews the Belgian co-production Rust & Bone directed by Jacques Audiard.
What else. . .
Besides our ‘regular’ contributors (Marcia, Edo's Crooke, Johan, Erik, Henny, Maria), this issue is packed again with many other interesting articles, e.g. Amsterdam Connecting; Book Reviews; Community & Club news; Dutch Cuisine (Tulband, traditionally served at Christmas); Childrens pages; etc. etc.
